A building is only as strong as its foundation. Accurate concrete calculation for footings and walls ensures structural stability and cost efficiency.
Understanding the Components
The base of the foundation that spreads the load of the walls to the soil. Typically wider than the wall it supports (e.g., a 24" footing for an 8" wall).
The vertical walls sitting on the footings that support the structure above ground. Usually reinforced with rebar.
Critical Factors: Frost Line
Why do footings need to be deep? To prevent frost heave. In freezing climates, soil expands when it freezes. If your footing is above the frost line, the frozen soil can lift and crack your entire foundation.
Calculation Tips
- Continuous Pour: Footings should ideally be poured in one continuous go to avoid "cold joints" which are weak points.
- Rebar Displacement: For massive commercial foundations, engineers calculate rebar displacement, but for residential projects, it's negligible.
- Order Extra: We recommend a safety margin of 10%. It's cheaper to dump a little extra concrete than to pay for a short-load truck to bring 0.5 yards.
