Note: Calculations assume 60lb bags yielding 0.45 cubic feet each. Always order 1-2 extra bags for waste.

Mastering Sonotube Calculations

Sonotubes (cylindrical cardboard concrete forms) are the gold standard for creating round concrete columns, deck posts, and light pole bases. Getting the mix right is essential for structural integrity and visual appeal.

Common Diameter Applications

8-Inch Tubes
Ideal for mailboxes, fence posts, and light decks.
12-Inch Tubes
Standard for residential deck footings and pergola supports.

Volume Calculation Logic

The volume of a cylinder is determined by its radius (half the diameter) and height. The math runs deep:

Volume = π × (Diameter/2)² × Height

Pro Tip: When digging holes for Sonotubes, dig at least 6 inches deeper than the frost line to prevent frost heave from lifting your structure.

Estimated Bag Counts

For a comprehensive pour, knowing only the volume isn't enough. Here's a quick cheat sheet for a 4-foot deep post:

  • 8" Diameter: ~2.5 bags (60lb)
  • 10" Diameter: ~4 bags (60lb)
  • 12" Diameter: ~5.5 bags (60lb)
